Colostrum: The Value for Newborn Lambs

The administration of high-quality and sufficient colostrum is crucial in preventing diseases like diarrhoea and pneumonia, ultimately reducing mortality rates in newborn lambs. Colostrum provides essential energy for temperature regulation, fosters faster growth rates, and enhances future performance.

2. How much colostrum should a lamb consume?

For optimal results, colostrum should be administered as swiftly as possible, ideally within the first four hours of the lamb’s birth. Both timing and quantity are critical. A lamb with an average birth weight of 3.5 kilograms should consume at least 700ml of colostrum within the initial 18 hours of life.

3. What does high quality, full of nutrients mean?

  • In terms of antibodies (IgGs) to support immunity build-up, it means colostrum with at least 50 grams IgG per litre (Brix value of at least 22).
  • In addition, colostrum naturally contains colostrum fat, which is the main source of energy for the newborn lamb. Newborn lambs cannot yet regulate their own temperature properly and therefore rely heavily on this fat from colostrum for energy, which contains specific fats that the lamb can convert into heat. Presence of this colostrum fat is therefore essential for the lamb.
  • Finally, colostrum fat contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and other important nutrients are also found in colostrum, such as lactoferrin, a protein that stimulates intestinal development and resistance.
