The Importance of Salt in the Diet of Sheep and Goats

Salt

The elements found in common salt, sodium, and chlorine are essential for the lives of animals. Salt is a fundamental component of blood. When provided by a reliable source, goats and sheep can regulate their salt intake independently. When animals consume much fresh, moisture-rich vegetation, it is essential to provide them with enough salt to support their higher metabolic rate and maintain proper hydration levels in their bodies. Since these animals consume more water through their food, they need more salt to help keep the balance of fluids and electrolytes in their bodies. Without sufficient salt, they could become dehydrated, which could lead to a range of health problems. Salt is equally essential in the diet of goats and sheep as water or animal feed. Salt plays a crucial role in animal growth, efficiency, and reproduction. Its consumption helps prevent dehydration and aids in the digestion and absorption of food.

Τhe problems that animals can face due to a lack of salt include

  • Low body weight
  • Low levels of meat and milk production
  • Joint problems
  • Weaker animals
  • Reduced fertility and heat stress

Practical ways to provide salt in the diet of sheep and goats are:

  • Free-choice salt blocks: Provide salt blocks in the grazing or feeding area, allowing the animals to lick the pieces as needed.
  • The use of salt blocks is not recommended for sheep. Instead, it is recommended to provide salt granules or a salt mixture in their animal feed.
