Twin lambs reach peak milk production in the third week of lactation due to their increased nursing frequency. However, nursing more than two lambs does not lead to a significant increase in milk production. Ewes nursing a single lamb may produce 40% less milk than their genetic potential allows, as twin lambs nurse more frequently, stimulating higher milk production.

Body weight of the lamb at birth:
Ewes giving birth to heavier lambs tend to produce more milk. This, for some researchers, is due to the increased nutritional needs of the lamb, forcing it to nurse more often and empty the udder (Moore, 1965). Other researchers, however, attribute the observed increase in milk production to the better nutrition of the ewe during pregnancy. This results in the birth of lambs with high body weight and the better development of the glandular parenchyma of the breast.

Body weight of ewe:
The body weight of a ewe is affected by general physical development and degree of fatness. The big ewes produce more milk compared to microsomes, and the fattening, however, hurts milk production.

Number of lactation periods:
During the first lactation period, 15-20% less milk is produced than in the second period, and the difference is much smaller between the 2nd and third periods. After the sixth lactation period, a decrease is observed, which becomes more pronounced as the age of the ewe increases. The low milk production during the first lactation period is because the ewes have not yet completed their development in general, as well as that of the mammary glandular parenchyma. The decrease in milk production after the sixth lactation period is due to degeneration of the glandular parenchyma.

Nutrition:
Adequate quantitative and qualitative nutrition during the last stage of pregnancy has a favourable effect on milk production during the following period.
A decrease in milk production of domestic ewes is typical at the end of winter, and a new increase once the animals are out on pasture in early spring.
Therefore, during the first two months of the lactation period, it is necessary to feed the ewes with palatable and nutrient-rich feed; otherwise, they will perform less than their genetic potential allows. However, proper nutrition at this stage is complicated.

Number of milking’s per 24 hours:
Weaning of lambs results in a sharp reduction in the milk production of ewes by 30% and sometimes more (Labussiere & Petrequin, 1969). This is due to a neurohormonal disorder and lack of secretion of sufficient oxytocin. At least ten days are required to restore the hormonal balance. It is characteristic that the more “tied” the ewe is with her lamb, the more significant the reduction in milk production. To give much milk during milking, a ewe must not have a highly developed uterine filter (Eyal et al., 1958).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Factors affecting milk production capacity in goats and sheep The number of lactating lambs: Ewes nursing two lambs produce 37% more milk during the lactation period than those nursing only one lamb.
